Trail Tails: The Outer Banks of NC

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is famous for long stretches of beach and great for off-road driving. David Smith, a pharmacist from Asheville, leapt at the chance to get away for a weekend and explore beyond the tourist tracked spots. He came back with a real appreciation for the area and gave us a rundown of the fun with the logistics to get you there and back.

Rhino-Rack: What is it about exploring the outdoors you like?

David Smith: I love going away on the weekends and getting lost in the mountains. Having an off-road vehicle enables you to reach places a lot of others can’t. An off-road vehicle can take you to the most remote and scenic places in the world but you’re still in comfort.

Rhino-Rack: Tell us about the adventure you set out on?

David Smith: Last adventure was a 7-hour trip to North Carolina Coast. I took my truck to the Outer Banks and camped a few nights on a remote beach.

Rhino-Rack: How did you prepare for the trip? What are the important steps to take?

David Smith: Make sure to have all your food prepped, make sure to have proper disposal methods of your food waste. Make sure to plan for the worse and bring spare car parts and tools.

Rhino-Rack: What are the weather and terrain conditions like?

David Smith: The sand was very soft and unforgiving. It was strenuous on the motor but the conditions were clear so it was a great time! After the first full day, the night turned dark and windy signalling an inbound hurricane!

Beach driving

Rhino-Rack: What was it you intended to do/see/ experience there?

David Smith: I wanted to camp on a beach but not be able to see or hear anyone for miles. I wanted to be far away enough from the mainland to be able to see all the stars in the night sky.

Rhino-Rack: Did you accomplish that?

David Smith: We did, we traveled over 10 miles down the beach away from other campers.

Rhino-Rack: Were there any lessons learnt?

David Smith: Make sure to have printed out maps and don't forget propane.

Pit stop

Rhino-Rack: How did Rhino-Rack products help to facilitate your adventure?

David Smith: Freed up my cabin and help me mount items I would not want to keep in the car. Made it very easy to access. Kept all muddy and sandy items out of the interior.

Rhino-Rack: What is it about the destination or the journey of your adventure that makes the trip worthwhile?

David Smith: Very much, there is no money that could buy an experience like that.

Rhino-Rack: What’s the logistics of the adventure that other thrill seekers can follow?

David Smith: Always plan for the worst. I would rather have something and not need it then need it and not have it. Mission complete!
