Just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Get into the wild, and enjoy the winter wonderland that the great state of Colorado provides us with. Here’s our top 5 campsites within a few hours of Denver.
Jones Pass Road
Fairly accessible year round, Jones Pass Road is one of the most picturesque sites for camping in all of Colorado. The site is littered with mountain vistas and majestic pines, so pick a spot and bask in the serenity. If you’re a 4x4 fan, head down towards Vasquez Peak for some amazing overlanding opportunities.

Brainard Lake Recreation Area
Brainard Lake is only about 50 minutes from Boulder, and draws a good crowd of snowshoers and skiers. But come nightfall, you can just about have the place to yourself if you’re set up for snow camping. The Pawnee Campground in the Rec Area is closed for winter, but you’re fine to pitch a tent or build snow caves to the west of the lake.
Cheyenne Mountain State Park
If you’re chasing winter adventures for the whole family, look no further. Cheyenne Mountain State Park is south of Colorado Springs, and offers everything from snowshoeing and sledding to cross country skiing trails. They Cheyenne Mountain State Park’s Swift Pump loop is available all winter long with hook ups at all sites. It’s a must if you’re looking to make the most of Colorado’s winter wonderland - you’ll even get snowy views of the Continental Divide!

Pike National Forest, Colorado
With a 4WD, navigate PNF’s spider web of dirt roads to find a slice of weekend car camping heaven. Views of Pikes Peak abound for those willing to scamper up a never-ending moonscape of rock formations. Civilization is never far away, but you’ll feel like you’re a million miles from anywhere at PNF.
East Portal / Moffat Tunnel
About an hour from Boulder, the East Portal/Moffat Tunnel is an amazing hiking destination. It’s also the perfect spot to try out some winter camping! Snowshoeing, skiing and even iceclimbing are all available for adventure lovers. There’s a number of great camping areas within a short walk from the parking lot, so park up and get exploring. Arrive with plenty of daylight so you have enough time to find your spot, and set up a good site.
