Wind Noise Factors

Wind noise is a dynamic problem. Although there has been a lot of research, it is not conclusive. The factors that affect wind noise can change on every single drive and therefore no two trips may ever be the same. Different vehicles may also have differing results as they are different sizes, shapes and can travel at different speeds – i.e. Product A may not make noise on Vehicle X, but may be noisy on Vehicle Y. The fact that many of the elements that can affect wind noise are out of our control, makes it that much harder to manage.

 

How to reduce wind noise

Our high-end roof racks have been designed with rubber inserts to reduce noise and prevent whistling. Incorrect installation is the most common cause of noisy roof racks. If customers are still experiencing a high level of wind noise, they can try the following:

- Check the product’s instructions to ensure the rubber strips are installed correctly in the channels, both topside and underside of the roof rack bars. The rubber inserts should be cut to the correct length and fitted inside the channel so that there are no gaps

- Ensure that the end caps are installed and locked before driving

- Install a wind fairing

- Ensure to keep up regular maintenance of the product and ensure there are no loose parts which can contribute to noise levels

- Alter the setup of accessories where possible, to see if a different setup impacts the level of wind noise

- Remove roof racks (if possible) when not in use

- Some evidence suggests that roof racks that are higher off the roof or set further away from the windshield, make less noise

 

Customers need to be aware that any addition of fitted accessories will change their vehicles aerodynamic rating, as it may impact the level of wind noise they experience.
