Top Tips For Emotional and Mental Wellbeing

With depression, anxiety and suicide continuing to impact our community more than ever, Rhino-Rack Australia is proud to be supporting the Mental Wheels Foundation in making a real and lasting change to improving the mental health of all Australians.

Established to fund programs that improve mental health, the actions of the Mental Wheels Foundation include workshops, Scholarship Programs, and events to raise awareness and funds to directly improve mental wellbeing. The Foundation also works closely with Macquarie University to conduct research and Australian government organisation, Mindspot, for clinical support.

After some of our Australian colleagues finished their first 350km fundraising tour last year and as an official sponsor of the Mental Wheels Foundation, Rhino-Rack Australia recently caught up with Clinton Hill, CEO of the Mental Wheels Foundation, to chat about the work the Foundation has done over the years, their future plans, and to also share some tips from Mindspot for managing your emotional and mental wellbeing. With mental health in the spotlight around the world, we also wanted to share these tips with you and hope these messages can help you or someone you know.

Have confidence that things can improve

It is natural to feel stress, worry, depression and anxiety. However, letting these emotions build up can start to impact our lives. It is important to pay attention to the present moment and be aware of how you are feeling and what you can do to look after your mental and emotional wellbeing. The good news is that it gets better with treatment, even people who have had symptoms for decades.

Connect with other people

People will sometimes find themselves feeling isolated and lonely. Talking to others is a great way to feel connected and involved and gives a sense of belonging. Take time each day to talk to people. This can be a friend, family, work mate or someone else in the community. Having that support from a good friend or a good therapist can really help.

Do the things you enjoy and that are good for you

When we find ourselves in tough situations, we often stop doing the things we enjoy. This can mean we get less satisfaction in life, which can make us feel worse. Get back into the habit of doing things you enjoy and having something to look forward to each day. It can be as simple as listening to your favourite song, catching up with an old friend, or going for a drive.

Be patient and tackle one thing at a time

We often feel overwhelmed by the things we need to do, that we do not know where to begin. A good start is to write down all the things that need to be completed, choose an easy task, and tick it off. Accomplishments, no matter how small, will help build your confidence and momentum to tackle the bigger things. And, when possible, ask a friend or someone else to help.

Exercise and stay healthy

Our physical health is linked with our mental health too. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, getting a good night’s sleep, and getting regular physical checkups with your GP can all positively influence your mental and emotional wellbeing.
