With dramatic mountains in the north, unique lagoon national parks in the south, and an array of idyllic beaches in between, for a small city, Adelaide’s surroundings pack a punch. Here are four epic budget-friendly destinations near Adelaide to add to your adventure list.

Explore Kangaroo Island

Just 13 kilometres (8 miles) off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island offers an island escape with a difference. As the name suggests, the island’s wildlife is profound, with many species of native Australian animals residing here. Among wildlife spotting, the island offers 4WDing, sand dune fun, and plenty of adventure around its awe-inspiring landscapes. While Kangaroo Island might be known for being luxurious, that’s not to say it can’t be enjoyed on a budget. Pin Emu Bay and Vivonne Bay to your map for sand driving escapades, and for overnighting, sleep under the stars at one of the island’s campgrounds.

Create childhood memories at Victor Harbor

Drive just under 1.5 hours from Adelaide and you’ll reach the serene shores of Victor Harbor. Known for its wonderful wildlife (spotted both in the ocean and on land), picturesque bike tracks, expansive beaches and child-friendly experiences, there’s little wonder Victor Harbor’s brings about happy childhood memories for many. Stay overnight at the town’s Holiday & Cabin Park, complete with waterslides, mini golf, and plenty of space for the family to spread out.

Hit Coorong National Park’s beach tracks

Continue driving a little further on from Victor Harbor and you’ll hit the magnificent Coorong National Park. This isn’t just any park – Coorong is a saline lagoon that stretches out a whopping 140 kilometres (87 miles) along the coastline. This unique landscape attracts adventures keen to feel its otherworldly beauty while 4WDing on the beach, exploring its ecosystem on foot, or simply spending times with mates in the open wilderness. You’ll find plenty of campgrounds near the water here; the perfect base for an adventure.

Discover Mount Remarkable

If mountains are more your thing, then you’ll want to add Mount Remarkable to your list. Within easy reach of Adelaide (a 3.5-hour drive), this is the place to tune off to digital the world and tune into nature. Head off with your mates to spend your days exploring the parks dramatic gorges and mountain lookouts or have a laugh around the campfire. For those who enjoy a beer or two, drop by the nearby Jacka Brothers' Brewery for refreshing ales and delicious pizzas.
